The No. 17 Louisville men's soccer team will host Winthrop Sunday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. for the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals earned a first round bye after earning the No. 10 seed in the tournament field.
The Cardinals enter the game with an overall record of 12-5-1 and a BIG EAST record of 7-1-0. Sophomore Will Vitalis leads the team in scoring with four goals and six assists for 14 points. Sophomore Dylan Mares ranks second with four goals and five assists for 13 points. Junior Mike Mauro started the last 12 games for the Cardinals in goal. He owns a 0.82 goals against average with five shutouts and an 9-2-1 record.
Winthrop enters the game with an overall record of 12-8-2. On Thursday, the Eagles defeated SMU 3-1 in penalties to advance into the second round of the NCCA Tournament. Senior Alex Isern leads the Eagles with 26 points, nine goals, and eight assists. Enrique Miranda and Tom Banfield have both seen time in the goal for the Eagles. Miranda has played 13 games, while earning a starting spot in 11. He owns a 0.98 goals against average along with recording 48 saves. Banfield has played and started in 11 matches. He owns a 2.37 goals against average and has collected 51 saves.
The Cardinals lead the series against the Eagles 1-0-0. Louisville earned the only victory between these two programs in 2004, when they won 2-1 in double overtime.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youths, students and senior citizens. Tickets will go on sale at 9:00 a.m. at the athletic ticket offices. You can also call the athletic ticket office at 852-5151 for tickets. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $4.
