Louisville, Ky. - For the third straight season, the Louisville men's soccer team begins the season ranked in the Top 10 of the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason poll. The Cardinals enter the season ranked No. 7 this season, one of four BIG EAST teams in the rankings.
Louisville returns seven starters from a team that advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Cardinals lost five starters from last year, including four year starting keeper Andre Boudreaux. Four of those five starters were drafted in the 2012 MLS Super Draft, with three players taken in the first round.
Senior midfielder Paolo DelPiccolo will be counted on heavily to lead the midfield this season. The four year starter finished last season with six assists, ranking him second on the team in that category. Also helping out in the midfield is senior Michael Roman. Roman finished his first season with the Cards last season after transferring from UCLA. He finished the year ranked fourth on the team with four goals and three assist for 11 points. Sophomore Alex Obbey will also give the Cards experience in the midfield. Obbey came on late last season and scored two goals and dished out two assists.
Three starters return to the backline for the Cardinals in seniors Greg Cochrane and Brock Granger along with Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year Andrew Farrell. Cochrane started every game in the back field for the Cardinals last season after transferring from Virginia Tech. He finished the year with two assists while helping the Cards to 11 shutouts. Granger is a two-year starter for the Cardinals. He also finished the year with two assists. Farrell moved to the backline late last year and helped turn the season around, finishing the last eight games with a 6-1-1 record after the move. Farrell finished the year with one goal and five assists.
