Louisville, Ky. - The New England Revolution selected University of Louisville defender Andrew Farrell with the first overall selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft this afternoon at the Indiana Convention Center. Farrell becomes just the third top pick in Louisville history behind Pervis Ellison and Angel McCoughtry. Seniors Paolo DelPiccolo and Greg Cochrane were selected in the second round. DelPiccolo was selected by the Montreal Impact with the 27th pick while Cochrane was selected by the LA Galaxy with the 38th pick.

"I am excited for all three guys as today and the opportunity they have to continue their careers in the MLS," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We are also happy for Andrew being selected first in the draft. It is a testament to him the program and the growth of Louisville soccer. We look forward to following their continued success as they will represent the University of Louisville well."

Farrell anchored the Cardinals' defense in 2012 and was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year. After leading his team to a 0.62 goals allowed per game average. Farrell was also a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and first-team NSCAA All-American. But in addition to playing center back, Farrell also played at right back as well as defensive midfield. He started all 44 games and scored six goals and added six assists in his three-year career.

"We're very pleased to add Andrew to the Revolution," General Manager Michael Burns said. "We believe he is the best player available in this draft class and proactively made the deal with Toronto to move up the draft order so we could ensure he was available when we picked. We're looking forward to getting him into camp with us and getting him acclimated to the Revolution. We believe he has a very bright future with our club and in this league."

"It has been an exciting day," said Farrell. "This has all been a combination of hard work and all the people who have helped me along the way. I am thankful for the opportunity to show what I can do with such a great organization. I am grateful for the time I had at Louisville and to all the great fans that supported me along the way. I am excited about playing for the New England Revolution."

DelPiccolo is currently in Germany on trial with Eintracht Frankfurt. He started all 21 matches for the Cardinals in the midfield. He finished his four year career at Louisville ranked as the all-time assist leader with 23 career assists. He finished this season tied for second on the team with six assists. DelPiccolo was named first team NSCAA All-Great Lakes region and earned first team All-BIG EAST honors this season.

Cochrane started in all 21 games for the Cardinals and ranked second on the team with six goals. He moved to the midfield this season after starting in the back line his junior year. Cochrane finished ranked second on the team with 15 points on the year. Cochrane earned All-BIG EAST third team honors this season after helping the Cards capture the Red Division title. He was also named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region third team.

"It feels great to be drafted," said Cochrane. "I still know I have a lot of work ahead of me to make the roster. It is a great opportunity and I look forward to the challenge. The Louisville coaching staff really helped me to develop and this year made me a more versatile player. I look for big things from the Cardinals in the future."
