The No. 14 Louisville (11-4-1) men's soccer team defeated UC Irvine 2-1 Wednesday evening in the home finale at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals scored two second half goals to come from behind to beat the Anteaters.
The Cardinals were not as sharp as usual in the first half and it showed. UC Irvine was able to keep possession early on. The Anteaters took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when Cameron Iwasa nailed a shot from 18 yards out.
Both teams finished the first period with three shots each. Louisville held a 2-0 lead in corner kicks. UC Irvine goalkeeper Michael Breslin finished the period with one save while Cardinal keeper Mike Mauro finished with one.
The Cardinals came out stronger in the second half and applied offensive pressure. Iwasa had another shot on goal in the opening minute but Mauro came up with the save. The Louisville pressure paid off in the 48th minute. Paolo DelPiccolo took a corner kick and sent the ball to the middle of the box where Daniel Keller headed the ball in to score the equalizer.
Louisville continued to apply offensive pressure after the goal. DelPiccolo had a shot on goal in the 56th minute. UC Irvine did not give up and had chances in the 69th and 73rd minutes but Mauro came up with the saves.
In 88th minute Marlon Hairston got free on a breakaway and slotted the inside the box to Dylan Mares who found the back of the net for the game-winner. The Cardinal defense was able to hold the Anteaters without a shot on goal to preserve the win.
Louisville finished the game with a 10-8 shot advantage and a 6-0 corner kick advantage. Mauro finished with four saves while Breslin finished with three.
The Cards will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m.
