The Louisville men's soccer team defeated Ohio State 4-0 Tuesday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals improve to 4-3-0 on the season while the Buckeyes fall to 3-4-1 on the year.
Louisville started out aggressive on offense to start the game. Freshman Marlon Hairston struck first for the Cardinals. Hairston got inside the box and sent a shot that the keeper deflected then he gathered the ball off the deflection and powered it past the keeper in the 19th minute. Twenty minutes later Greg Cochrane sent a cross inside the box to Will Vitalis who fired a shot past the keeper to put the Cards up 2-0.
Louisville finished the first period with a 6-2 shot advantage while Ohio State held a 1-0 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper Mike Mauro finished with one save while Alex Wimmer finished the period with three saves.
The Cardinal offense continued to click in the second half. Just five minutes into the second period Paolo DelPiccolo took a free kick just outside the box and sent it to Andrew Farrell. Farrell sent a cross to Zach Foxhoven in the center of the box for the score and his first goal of the season.
Thirty seconds later Vitalis sent a cross to Cochrane who found the back of the net to put the Cards up 4-0. The Buckeyes' best chance for a goal came in the 78th minute when Zach Dobey gathered a deflection and sent a shot toward a goal that was headed out by a Cardinal defender.
Louisville finished the game with a 15-6 shot advantage while corner kicks were tied at four apiece. Mauro finished with one save and registered his first shutout and win of the season. Wimmer finished with five saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22 as they host Notre Dame for the first BIG EAST game of the year at 7:00 p.m.
