The No. 8/14 Louisville men's soccer team defeated Belmont 3-1 Saturday night at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals came from one goal down early in the second half to score three straight goals for the win. The Cardinals improve to 1-1-0 on the year while Belmont falls to 0-2-1.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie. Louisville had its best shot to convert at the 30 minute mark when Greg Cochrane sent a ball to Alex Obbey who found Will Vitalis streaking up the center of the field. Vitalis hit the ball straight to the Belmont keeper who collected it for the save. The Cards finished the first half with a 7-1 shot advantage. Belmont keeper Lou Manning finished with two saves in the period while Ball was not tested.
The Bruins struck first with a goal by Brandon Tarr in the 50th minute. Seven minutes later the Bruins' luck changed as they had a player issued a red card and had to play the rest of the match a man down.
The Cardinals kept the majority of the possession in the second half. Isaiah Trejo found Ryan Smith in the center of the field to score the equalizer in the 65th minute. Then six minutes later Buck Tufty took a deflection and sent it to freshman Marlon Hairston in the middle of the box. Hairston ripped a shot past the Belmont keeper for the game-winner.
The Bruins had a chance to tie it in the 80th minute with a header inside the box, but the ball sailed high over the crossbar. Louisville quickly gained possession and continued to press offensively. Dylan Mares gathered the ball on the right sideline and sent the ball to Vitalis on the left side. Vitalis found Obbey who scored the security goal in the 86th minute.
The Cardinals finished the game with a 17-4 shot advantage over the Bruins, including a 6-1 shot on goal advantage. Both teams finished with three corner kicks. Manning finished with three saves for the match.
Louisville will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 as they travel to Saint Louis for 7:00 p.m. match.
