The No. 5/7 Louisville men's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 3/9 Maryland on Sunday night at Ludgwig Field in the season opener. The Cardinals fall to 0-1 on the season while Maryland improves to 1-0.
Heavy rain drenched the field prior to the match. Senior Paolo DelPiccolo had a shot on goal just over five minutes in but Keith Cardona came up with the save. The Terps opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Schillo Tshuma found the net from close range after a cross from Jane. Dan Metzger doubled Maryland's advantage in the 30th minute off a header from Jake Pace in the box. Alex Obbey had a chance in the 40th minute but the Maryland defense blocked it.
Both teams finished with four shots in the first half and one corner kick. Cardinal keeper Joachim Ball finished with one save while Cardona also finished with one save.
The Cardinals applied more offensive pressure in the second half. The Cardinals earned three corner kicks early in the second half but were unable to capitalize off of them. Louisville's best chances came in the 76th minute off a shot on goal from Zach Foxhoven. Then in the 77th minute Will Vitalis had another shot on goal. John Sterzer sealed the game for Maryland in the 86th minute.
Maryland finished the match with an 8-7 shot advantage. While the Cardinals had a 5-3 corner kick advantage. Ball finished with three saves while Cardona finished with three saves.
The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 1 as they host Belmont in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
