MURRIETA, CA -- U of L junior men's golfer Grant Sturgeon fired a final round 68 (-4) to jump over seven golfers and capture his first individual title of his collegiate career at the San Diego Aztec Invitational. Sturgeon's 68 gave him a 54-hole total of 210 (-6) for a two-shot win over a pair of San Diego State golfers.
Host SDSU took team title honors with a 24-shot win over second place Santa Clara and a second SDSU squad.
As a team, the Cardinals finished fourth overall with a three-round score of 873. Sturgeon's effort was backed by strong outings from teammates Geoff Nuwash, Chris Campbell and Dean Halterman. The trio tied for 20th place overall at 221 (+5) as the Cards posted their best team finish of the 2000 fall season.
Sturgeon's victory was the first by a Cardinal since the spring of 1998 when Kris Maffet brought home a Conference USA title.
The Cardinals' trip to San Diego wraps up the fall portion of their '00-01 schedule with four top seven finishes in five autumn competitions.
