HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The U of L men's golf team resides in fifth place after 36 holes of the 15-team Birkdale Collegiate Classic being played in suburban Charlotte, N.C.. U of L's two-round total of 599 puts them just one stroke behind Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland.

Junior Grant Sturgeon topped the Cardinals on Day One shooting back-to-back 73s (+1) to stand in a sixth-place tie with three other golfers. Sturgeon's total of 146 made him the only Cardinal to post a top 20 showing after 36 holes. Sturgeon enters the final 18 just five shots behind leader Pat Beste of East Tennessee State.

Male High School product Chris Campbell shook off the effects of a senior year slump to fire 75-74 = 129 (+5) to join a pair of competitors in 22nd place.

Junior Geoff Nuwash opened his spring campaign with a two-round score of 151 (+7) after firing rounds of 76 and 74 on the 7,013-yard course.
