SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Keyed by solid performances by sophomores Brett Jones and Charlie Woo, the University of Louisville men's golf team fired its best round of the young season, an even-par 288, to notch a fifth-place finish at the second annual Mid Pines Intercollegiate hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Mid Pines Inn and Golf Course in Southern Pines, N.C.

The Cards entered the final round tied for sixth place with Central Florida at 585, nine strokes over par and 16 shots off the pace set by eventual tournament champion California. While California had distanced itself from the group, several teams remained within striking distance as the third round got underway. Eight shots separated second-place East Carolina (578) and the Cards (585) and Central Florida (585) in sixth, with Wichita State (579), Ball State (581) and Virginia Commonwealth (582) in between.

Sparked by Jones' one-under-par 71 and Woo's three-under-par 69, the Cards' final-round 288 allowed them to pass Ball State and separate themselves from Central Florida and finish just two shots behind third-place Wichita State (871). In fact, the Cards put eight shots between themselves and Central Florida in the final round.

Jones, who rebounded from an opening-round 74 with a second-round 70 and a final-round 71, finished tied for seventh place at 215, marking the fourth top 10 finish of his career. Woo, who struggled with rounds of 74 and 75 on Monday, responded with a Cardinal career-best 69 to finish tied with teammate Matt Bascom at 218 for 14th-place. Bascom, who carried the Cards with a Cardinal career-best 70 followed by a 71 on Monday, faded down the stretch with a final-round 77.

Sophomore Matthew Britt, a Louisville native who spent last season at Morehead State, finished the tournament tied for 41st at 226, while fellow sophomore Mark Anderson finished tied for 56th at 230.
