LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville head coach Charlie Strong met with reporters on Monday to preview next week's Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. The Cardinals will face Southern Miss in the bowl game in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Tues, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m., ET at Tropicana Field, and the game will be televised live by ESPN.

Needing to win the final regular-season game to become bowl eligible, the Cardinals defeated Rutgers 40-13 to end the regular season at 6-6, 3-4 in the BIG EAST Conference. Louisville will be playing in its 15th bowl game in school history and first under first-year head coach Strong. The Cardinals' last trip to the postseason was back in 2006, when they defeated Wake Forest 24-13 in the FedEx Orange Bowl -- the school's first BCS appearance.

Louisville appeared in nine straight bowl games from 1998-2007 before missing the postseason the last three seasons. The Cardinals are 6-7-1 all-time in bowl games and have won two of their last three appearances. Louisville made its first appearance in a BCS bowl when it defeated Wake Forest 24-13 in the 2007 FedEx Orange Bowl.

This will be Louisville's third straight bowl appearance in the state of Florida. Prior to defeating Wake Forest in the 2007 Orange Bowl, the Cardinals dropped a 35-24 decision to Virginia Tech in the 2006 Gator Bowl.

The Cardinals had an up-and down season in 2010, starting off by losing two of its first three games, but came back to win three of the next four games, including shutout wins over Memphis (56-0) and Connecticut (26-0).

Under head coach Larry Fedora, Southern Miss finished at 8-4 overall, 5-3 in Conference USA. This will be the ninth consecutive football bowl appearance for the Golden Eagles and 13th in the last 14 years. The program makes its first showing in a Florida bowl game in 29 years, since playing Missouri in the 1981 Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. This will be the fourth Southern Miss bowl appearance in the state of Florida as the previous three came in the Tangerine Bowl.

The Series - Louisville and Southern Mississippi
The Cardinals and Golden Eagles are meeting on the football field for the 29th time, with USM holding an 18-9-1 advantage in the series, which dates back to 1949. Louisville has won four straight overall against Southern Miss, including a 25-23 comeback win by the Cardinals on Oct. 10, 2009 on homecoming at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
