LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville football head coach Charlie Strong and senior quarterback Adam Froman met with reporters on Monday to preview Saturday's road game at No. 25 Oregon State. The Cardinals and Beavers are scheduled to kick off at 5:35 p.m. ET at Reser Stadium and the game will be televised by FOX Sports Northwest. WBKI-TV will also carry the game locally.
Louisville captured its first win of the Charlie Strong era with a 23-13 victory over Eastern Kentucky at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals scored 23 second quarter points to hold off a late EKU rally. The Louisville defense held the Colonels to just 230 yards of total offense and registered eight total sacks, including 4.5 by senior defensive end Rodney Gnat. The defense also held the Colonels to only 92 yards on the ground and just 2.6 yards per carry. EKU was 11-for-23 for just 138 yards through the air.
For the second straight game, senior running back Bilal Powell paced the Cardinals with 92 yards on 16 carries, but did find the end zone twice from two and three yards out. Senior quarterback Adam Froman completed 15-of-23 passes for 219 yards, including the first career touchdown reception by senior Doug Beaumont.
The Beavers had a week off after opening their season on Sept. 4 with a 30-21 defeat against TCU in Dallas. TCU's Andy Dalton ran for two touchdowns and threw for another score to make up for his two interceptions to lead TCU past the Beavers. Brothers Jacquizz and James Rodgers both scored touchdowns for Oregon State in their first college game in their home state. Jacquizz Rogers ran 18 times for 75 yards and James Rogers had four catches for 75 yards.
The Series - Louisville and Oregon State
The Cardinals and Beavers will meet for just the second time in school history on Saturday. Louisville handed Oregon State a 63-27 defeat at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in 2005 in the only other meeting between the two schools.
The Coaches
Charlie Strong (1-2), a 27-year veteran in the coaching ranks, is in his first full season as head coach of the Cardinals. Strong received his first head coaching job after spending the last seven years at the University of Florida, where he served as the defensive coordinator, winning a pair of national championships with the Gators. Strong served as the head coach of the Gators for the 2004 Peach Bowl after Ron Zook was fired - a 27-10 loss to Miami.
Mike Riley (64-48) has rightfully been credited with the rebirth of Oregon State football. The 57-year-old head coach has guided the Beavers to six bowl games in the last seven years, winning five, and started the rejuvenation of the program during his first tenure in 1997-98 that subsequently made three postseason appearances.
