Sept. 9, 2001

LOUISVILLE, KY -- Off to their best start since the 1993 season, the Louisville Cardinals (3-0) make their first appearance in the Associated Press Top 25 at No. 25 this week. The Cards move into the nation's elite after a 31-7 win over Division I-AA Western Carolina Saturday night. U of L remains at the top of the list of schools receiving votes in the ESPN / USA Today Coaches' Top 25, a mere four points behind No. 25 and fellow unbeaten Brigham Young.

U of L finished the 2000 regular season as the nation's No. 22 team according to the Associated Press but fell from the top 25 following its Liberty Bowl loss to Colorado State.

The Cardinals' highest ranking on record came during the 1993 season when U of L placed 13th nationally in the coaches' poll on Nov. 1.

U of L takes its national ranking on the road this week to Champaign, Ill. and will battle Big Ten foe Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
