Kelby Johnson played one season at ASA College for Dennis Orlando, where he was a junior college all-conference selection for the Avengers, who ended the year at 9-1. A massive specimen with outstanding athletic ability, Johnson spent two years at Virginia. A 2012 redshirt for the Cavaliers, Johnson was one of 12 true freshmen to appear in games, seeing action in four contests. Johnson signed at Virginia after playing scholastically as an offensive tackle at DeMatha Catholic High. An outstanding athlete, Johnson was ranked the No. 113 offensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com and was rated the No. 16 prospect in Maryland by Rivals.com. Johnson received a scout's score of 75 from ESPN.com and was ranked the No. 128 offensive tackle in nation by ESPN.com. Johnson received multiple three-star ratings by Scout.com, Rivals.com, and ESPN.com. He was named to the Gazette All-County second-team as a senior and was tabbed to ESPN RISE second-team All-Big School for Maryland. A first team All-Gameday selection, Johnson earned 2010 Maryland "Big School" first-team all-state honors his senior year and was selected to play in the 2010 Crab Bowl, honoring the top high school players in the Maryland and Metro area. As one of the top offensive tackles in the state, Johnson helped head coach Bill McGregor's Stags to an impressive 9-3 record and advanced to the WCAC title game during his senior season. He also played varsity basketball during his freshman and sophomore years before focusing on football. Johnson chose Louisville over offers from Kansas, USF, Connecticut, East Carolina, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
