Gering began his career as an assistant football and track coach at Trinity High School from 1953-1965.

A native of Louisville, Gering graduated from Flaget High School where he was a member of two state title football teams in 1949 and 1952 before earning his bachelor of science and masters degrees in education from U of L in 1961.
