LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's basketball team was one of five Cardinal teams that have been recognized with 2013-14 American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport. UofL also earned similar national recognition from the NABC.

The Cardinals were honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches with a 2013-14 Team Excellence Award, which recognizes teams across the nation with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2013-14 academic year. The Cardinals were one of just eight schools currently in one of the Power Five conferences to attain the honor from the NABC.

It was the fourth consecutive conference team academic honor as the Cardinals basketball team, which earned three straight similar awards as members of the Big East Conference (2010-13), including U of L teams which reached the 2012 Final Four and won the 2013 NCAA Championship. Louisville teams which also earned the ACC team recognition among the league's 21 sports include women's golf, women's rowing, volleyball and men's indoor track and field.

The Cardinals' men's basketball, volleyball and women's golf teams were also conference champions in competition. Louisville's men's basketball team shared the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference regular-season title, won the tournament championship and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 while posting a 31-6 record overall. UofL's women's volleyball team posted an 18-0 record in conference play in winning the league title and the Cardinals' women's golf team captured the first American Athletic Conference title with a one-stroke victory in the conference championship.

Coach Rick Pitino's team earned a collective 3.40 GPA for the 2013-14 academic year, the highest ever for the UofL men's basketball team. The team produced a record 3.47 combined GPA for the 2013 fall semester, the highest ever semester average for the Cardinals' men's basketball team and the best among UofL's men's sports programs. The men's basketball team has been around a collective 3.0 GPA for the last 12 straight semesters.

The academic achievement is not new to the Cardinals. UofL's men's basketball was among the top 10 percent in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate scores released in May, which measures academic eligibility, retention and graduation for student-athletes. The Cardinals have a perfect 1000 score for the most recent four-year period from 2009-13. Over that four-year period, Louisville's academic success has come while winning a combined 110 games on the court.
