LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
University of Louisville incoming freshman forward Montrezl Harrell has been named to the USA Basketball U18 National Team.
Harrell, who signed with the Cardinals last week, and his USA teammates will compete in the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which will be played June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. The U.S. team will continue to train through June 11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and will depart June 12 for the South American nation.
Selections for the 12-man team, composed of the nation's top 18-year-old and younger players, were made following the team's ninth practice on June 9. Joining Harrell on the team are Nathaniel Britt, II (Gonzaga H.S., D.C./Upper Marlboro, Md.); Sam Dekker(Sheboygan Lutheran H.S./Sheboygan, Wis./Wisconsin signee); Shaq Goodwin (Southwest DeKalb H.S./Decatur, Ga./Memphis signee); Jerami Grant (DeMatha Catholic/Bowie, Md./Syracuse signee); Jake Layman (King Phillip Regional H.S./Wrentham, Mass./Maryland signee); Rodney Purvis (Upper Room Christian/Raleigh, N.C./North Carolina State signee); Julius Randle (Prestonwood Christian Academy/ McKinney, Texas); James Robinson (DeMatha Catholic H.S./Mitchellville, Md./Pittsburgh signee); Marcus Smart (Marcus H.S./Flower Mound, Texas/Oklahoma State signee); Jarnell Stokes (Memphis, Tenn./Tennessee signee); and Rasheed Sulaimon (Strake Jesuit College Prep/Houston, Texas/Duke signee).
University of Florida Coach Billy Donovan is the head coach of the 2012 USA U18 National Team, which includes assistant coaches Mark Few of Gonzaga and Shaka Smart from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Harrell, a 6-7, 225-pound forward from Tarboro, N.C. who played last season at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., signed a financial aid agreement with UofL last week. He averaged 25.2 points, 13.6 rebounds and three blocks last season for Hargrave, which posted a 38-1 record and finished as the national prep runner-up.
