LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's basketball team begins a two-game road swing with a trip to Piscataway, N.J., on Wednesday, Feb. 6, to face BIG EAST foe Rutgers.
Tip in the Rutgers Athletic Center is set for 7:34 p.m., and the game will air live on the BIG EAST Network, as Scott Graham (play-by-play) and Bob Wenzel (analyst) announce the contest. The radio broadcast can be heard on WHAS 840 AM, with Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Bob Valvano (analyst) calling the action.
No. 11/12 Louisville (18-4, 6-3 BIG EAST) handed Marquette its second BIG EAST loss of the season, winning 70-51. After a slow start left Louisville in a 16-10 deficit, the Cardinals finished the half on a 28-8 run. The Cardinals continued the streak by opening the second half on a 15-6 run, widening the score to 53-30. Russ Smith led all scorers with 18 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Peyton Siva added 14 points, seven assists and two steals. Vander Blue led Marquette with 17 points and five rebounds, while Trent Lockett added 16 points and two steals.
Louisville’s superior defense continues to be one of its mainstays, as the Cardinals rank No. 3 nationally in steals per game (11.2), No. 3 in turnover margin (6.5), No. 8 in scoring margin (16.2), and No. 16 in scoring defense (57.6).
Rutgers enters Wednesday’s contest with a 12-8 overall record, including a 3-6 mark in league play. The Scarlet Knights have dropped four straight, with their most recent loss coming against Cincinnati, 62-54, on Jan. 30. Myles Mack came off the bench to register a team-high 15 points in the loss, while Jerome Seagears and Eli Carter each netted 11 points. Sean Kilpatrick’s 19 points and four assists led Cincinnati, and Cheikh Mbodj added 10 points and four offensive rebounds.
The Scarlet Knights are under the direction of third-year head coach Mike Rice, who has a 38-43 overall record. This season, Rutgers was picked to finish 11th in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Scarlet Knights are led by Carter’s 15.2 points per game, and senior Dane Miller, averaging 7.4 points and 5.7 rebounds, is 11 points shy of becoming Rutgers 39th 1,000 point scorer.

Louisville owns a 10-1 all-time series advantage over Rutgers, with the first meeting coming in 1975. The Cardinals, winners of six straight, defeated the Scarlet Knights last year, 78-66, in the KFC Yum! Center. Chane Behanan led the Cardinals with a double-double for 23 points and 11 rebounds, while hitting on 11-of-12 attempts. Chris Smith chipped in with eight points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Eli Carter’s 24 points and six rebounds led the Scarlet Knights. The last time the two teams met in Piscataway, the Cardinals posted a 55-37 victory behind Preston Knowles’ 14 points and five steals.
