LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's basketball team will play its first of two "color" events this Sunday, Feb. 2, when No. 25 Marquette travels to the KFC Yum! Center in a BIG EAST showdown.
The game has been declared a White Out, and fans are encouraged to wear white. The official "White Out 2013" T-shirt will be available exclusively at the Cardinal Authentic store in the KFC Yum! Center on game day. The team will be wearing special adidas uniforms for the game.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN, as Dan Shulman (play-by-play) and Jay Bilas (analyst) announce the contest. Fans also can listen to the game on WHAS 840 AM, with Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Bob Valvano (analyst) broadcasting the game.
No. 12/13 Louisville (17-4, 5-3 BIG EAST) snapped a three-game losing streak on Monday, when it defeated Pittsburgh at home, 64-61. After a slow start, the Cardinals took a 10-9 advantage on a Russ Smith free throw and never relinquished the lead. Smith led all scorers with 20 points, and Gorgui Dieng registered his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds, adding five blocks and four assists. Peyton Siva recorded his fifth double-digit assist game, finishing with 10. Tray Woodall's 14 points and three assists led Pittsburgh.
No. 25 Marquette (15-4, 6-1) is tied with Syracuse atop the BIG EAST standings coming into Sunday's matchup. Last time out, the Golden Eagles handed USF its 10th loss of the season, winning easily, 63-50. Marquette was led by Vander Blue's 30 points on 13-of-20 shooting in 34 minutes. Collectively, the Golden Eagles shot 55.1 percent from the field and recorded 15 assists.
Statistically, Louisville ranks in the top-20 nationally in turnover margin (No. 2), steals per game (No. 3), scoring margin (No. 10), and scoring defense (No. 17). Marquette ranks in the top-50 nationally in field goal percentage (46.3 percent), and Davante Gardner is 56th in the country in free throw percentage (84.8).
The Golden Eagles are under the direction of fifth-year head coach Buzz Williams, who's guided the program to a 111-49 overall mark and four-straight NCAA Tournament berths, including two-straight Sweet 16 appearances. Blue leads the team with 14.8 points a game and sixth-man Gardner leads the team in rebounds with 5.5 per game, while adding 12.7 points.
THE SERIES - Louisville vs. Marquette
The Cardinals lead the all-time series over 41-26, winning the last seven of nine contests, in a matchup that dates back to 1951. Last year, the two schools faced off twice with the latter match coming in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals when Louisville won convincingly, 84-71. The Cardinals, led by Kyle Kuric's 20 points, had four players finish in double figures, including Siva's all-around performance of 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
