LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino and sophomore forward Samardo Samuels met with members of the media on Wednesday at the Yum! Center to preview Thursday's game against Seton Hall. The Cards and Pirates will tip off at 7:02 p.m. ET at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
U of L plays its second straight on the road. Louisville fell to its second straight top 25 foe in losing 82-77 in overtime at Pittsburgh last Saturday. Samardo Samuels led the Cards with 25 points and six rebounds while Preston Knowles matched a career-high with 21 points. Samuels is the team leader with 16.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Seton Hall (10-6, 1-4 BIG EAST) won its first eight games of the season, but has dropped five of its last six (two in overtime). In their last game, the Pirates fell 85-73 at Georgetown on Jan. 14 as the Hoyas shot 68.2 percent from the field. The Pirates have the week off prior to facing the Cards.
Seton Hall is fourth nationally in scoring (84.7 ppg) and is among the nation's leaders in turnover margin (+4.4, 13th in the nation) and assists-to-turnovers ratio (1.41, 13th). Junior guard Jeremy Hazell, who had 33 points in their league win over Cincinnati, is second in the BIG EAST in scoring (22.9 ppg) and steal (2.1), and leads the league in three-pointers per game (3.4, 55-of-169). Seton Hall is No. 84 in the ratings percentage index (RPI) and is No. 61 in the Sagarin Ratings through Jan. 19.
Louisville leads the series 8-4 and has won five of the last six meetings. The Cardinals beat Seton Hall 95-78 in Freedom Hall in last year's meeting (3/4/09).
