Russ Smith Named AP Preseason All-American

Russ Smith is first preseason Associated Press All-America member since Pervis Ellison in 1986.

  • The only player in U of L history to total both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds
  • Ranks second all-time in scoring and is became only the second player at U of L to score 2,000 points in his career.
  • A consensus All-American in 1989.
  • MVP of the 1989 Metro Conference Tournament, an award he also won as a freshman.
  • The all-time shot blocker at U of L and in the Metro Conference with 374 career rejections
  • Blocked at least one shot in 130 of his 136 career games.
  • Finished his career third among NCAA career leaders in blocked shots.
  • Led the Cardinals to their second NCAA Championship title in 1986.
  • Was the first freshman since 1944 to be named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
