Shabaka Lands is in his first year on the U of L men's basketball staff as a program assistant.
His primary duties include assisting in opponent scouting through extensive film breakdowns, game preparation and assisting in on-campus recruiting efforts.
Before joining the U of L staff, Lands worked the last eight years at Indianapolis (Ind.) Pike High School as varsity assistant coach (2006-09), junior varsity head coach (2004-06) and head freshman coach (2001-04). His last two freshmen teams posted a combined 39-1 two-year record in 2002-04 and his two junior varsity teams were a collective 29-5 in two years (2004-06). He has coached several Pike players who have played in the collegiate ranks, such as Courtney Lee (Western Kentucky), Robert Vaden (UAB), Justin Cage (Xavier) and Jeff Teague (Wake Forest).
Lands started his coaching career as a seventh and eighth grade girls coach (1998-2001), leading his 2000-01 seventh grade team to a 13-1 record.
He played two years at Idaho State (1994-96), including the 1994-95 season when he helped the Vandals to an 18-10 record while leading the team in assists (109) and steals (52). He is second in career steals (2.13 per game) at Idaho St.
