2012 Pizza Bowl Series - Game One Photo Gallery
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With ongoing stadium expansion construction serving as the backdrop, Tingle's Titanium earned a 9-6 victory over Cheese's Chosen in game one of the Louisville baseball program's seventh annual Pizza Bowl series on Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Junior catcher Shane Crain (Lexington, Ky./Wabash Valley CC) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the way for the Titanium, while junior outfielder Coco Johnson (Benton Harbor, Mich./Central Arizona College) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Sophomore Aaron Gershenfeld (Champaign, Ill./Cushing Academy) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Titanium the lead for good. Junior outfielder Cole Sturgeon (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) and junior infielder Ty Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) also had back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning in the win.
On the mound, freshman righty Jordan Simons (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham HS) earned the win after allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief. Freshman right-hander Kyle Funkhouser (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) started the game for the Titanium allowing three earned runs on three with six strikeouts in four innings. After sophomore left-hander Kyle McGrath (Louisville, Ky./Eastern Kentucky) followed Simons with 1.2 innings of shutout relief, Sturgeon pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.
For the Chosen, senior outfielder Matt Helms (Eufaula, Okla./Seminole State CC) had an RBI single and a walk, junior outfielder Jeff Gardner (Louisville, Ky./Whitefield Academy) had an RBI double and a run scored and freshman Zack Soria added an RBI single in the loss. On the mound, junior lefty Cody Ege (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington HS) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in an inning of relief for the Chosen.
The series, which completes the Cardinals' fall workouts, will continue on Friday at 3 p.m., ET as senior right-hander Chad Green (Effingham, Ill./Effingham HS) will lead the Titanium against junior righty Jeff Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central HS) of the Chosen. The series will conclude on Saturday at 1 p.m., with junior righty Dace Kime (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance HS) scheduled to start for the Titanium against sophomore righty Joe Ceja (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette Academy) of the Chosen.
Due to the expansion construction at Jim Patterson Stadium, fans will only be allowed to watch the weekend scrimmages from the left field berm. Access to the left field berm will be available through the left field gate near Second Street. Fans will not have access to the ballpark through the front gates due to construction.

Overall, Louisville returns 21 letterwinners from the 2012 team, which finished 41-22 and advanced to an NCAA Regional for the fifth time in six seasons.

In his six previous seasons, McDonnell is 258-122 with three BIG EAST regular-season titles, two BIG EAST Tournament titles, five NCAA Regional berths, two NCAA Super Regional appearances and one College World Series berth.
