BOURNE, Mass. - University of Louisville right-hander Jeff Thompson made headlines in the prestigious Cape Cod League on Sunday night with his no-hit performance on the mound in the Bourne Braves' 9-0 win over first-place Harwich at Doran Park.
Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central HS) finished with nine strikeouts and allowed just two walks in a dominating six-inning, 80-pitch performance, which was halted early due to rain. The up-and-coming Louisville junior opened the game with four straight strikeouts against Harwich, which sits atop the Eastern Division standings in the Cape Cod League.
"I was feeling strong," Thompson said after the game to Dan Crowley of Enterprise Newspapers. "I always watch the scoreboard and I knew I had a no hitter going. I've been working on my change and it was working well. I got three or four ground balls and a strikeout with it. It's really starting to come around this summer."
With Sunday's performance, Thompson improved to 2-2 with 30 strikeouts in 29.0 innings pitched this summer for Bourne. During his sophomore season for the Cardinals in 2012, Thompson finished with a 9-4 record in 15 starts on the mound.
