LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball program had a trio of right-handed pitchers - Matt Koch, Derek Self and Justin Amlung - as well as one prep signee selected during day two of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday afternoon.
Koch (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington HS) was selected 107th overall by the New York Mets in the third round of the 40-round, three-day draft. He was followed by Self (Cave City, Ky./Caverna HS), who was taken 294th overall in the ninth round by the Washington Nationals, and Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS), who was selected 374th overall in the 12th round by the Chicago Cubs. Those three were joined by Louisville prep signee Nathan Mikolas (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford HS), who was selected 124th overall in the third round by the New York Yankees.
Koch completed his junior season as a Cardinal in 2012 finishing with a 2-2 record overall, four saves and a 3.34 ERA in 22 relief appearances. He had 30 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched and provided his best outing of the season on Sunday with 4.2 innings of shutout relief to earn the victory in Louisville's win over Missouri in the NCAA Regional in Tucson, Ariz.
A four-year member of the Cardinals, Self had a team-leading seven saves to go with a 2-2 record and a 3.41 ERA during his senior season in 2012. He made 26 appearances out of the bullpen and had 23 strikeouts in 31.2 innings of work this season. A Third Team All-BIG EAST selection this season, Self closes his career ranked fourth in pitching appearances at 96, fifth in wins at 19, seventh in ERA at 3.43 and tied for 10th in saves at nine.
A Third Team Louisville Slugger All-American and the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year in 2012, Amlung completed his junior season with a 9-4 record, a 2.31 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 109.0 innings pitched. A two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection, Amlung is 24-8 in three collegiate seasons with a 2.77 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 279.1 innings pitched. He ranks second at U of L in career wins and ERA, third in strikeouts, tied for fourth in starts (41) and sixth in innings pitched.
The first 60 selections of the 2012 MLB Draft, which included the first round and first compensation round, were completed on Monday night, while rounds 2-15 were completed on Tuesday. The final 25 rounds (16-40) will be completed on Wednesday afternoon. The deadline for MLB teams to sign players selected in the 2012 MLB Draft is 5 p.m., ET on Friday, July 13.
With the three selections during the first two days of this year's draft, the Louisville baseball program, under the direction of head coach Dan McDonnell, has produced 33 Major League Baseball draft selections during the last six seasons. In 2010, the Cardinals set a school record with 10 players selected in the draft.
