TUCSON, Ariz. - The 25th-ranked Louisville baseball team continued its preparations for the opening weekend of the 2012 NCAA Championship on Thursday afternoon with a practice session and meetings with reporters at Hi Corbett Field, site of the Tucson Regional.
The No. 3-seeded Cardinals (39-20) will open the regional against No. 2 seed New Mexico State (35-22) on Friday at 7 p.m., EDT (4 p.m., MST) in a nationally televised game on ESPNU. Top-seeded Arizona (38-17) and No. 4 Missouri (32-26) will complete the opening day of action at 11 p.m., EDT (8 p.m., MST) on ESPNU.
Louisville started its day at Hi Corbett Field with head coach Dan McDonnell, junior right-handed pitcher Justin Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS) and sophomore outfielder Adam Engel (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland HS) meeting with members of the ESPNU television crew to preview the Tucson Regional for the weekend telecasts. The Cardinals then took to the field for 75-minute practice session, which included outfielder communication and batting practice. That was followed by a press conference with McDonnell, senior outfielder Stewart Ijames (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) and senior righty Derek Self (Cave City, Ky./Caverna HS).
McDonnell announced on Thursday the Cardinals plan to start Amlung (8-4, 2.36 ERA), the 2012 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and a Louisville Slugger All-American, on the mound in the opener against the Aggies, who will throw junior lefty Ryan Beck (5-6, 4.22 ERA).
