LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville sophomore outfielder Adam Engel will be out of action for 2-4 weeks due to a thumb injury on his left (non-throwing) hand.

Engel (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland HS) suffered the injury during the fifth inning of last Sunday's loss to Seton Hall when he collided with a Pirate middle infielder while stealing second. The injury forced Engel out of the Cardinals' lineup for the first time this season in Tuesday's win at Indiana.

In his second season as a Cardinal, Engel has emerged as one of the nation's best base stealers as well as one of the most dynamic defensive players. The 6-1, 213-pound Engel entered the week ranked fifth in the nation with 28 stolen bases in 29 attempts and is hitting .322 overall as Louisville's leadoff hitter. Earlier this season, Engel had a team-high 15-game hitting streak and he leads the Cardinals with 14 multiple hit games in 2012.

Having started each of the Cardinals' first 36 games in centerfield, Engel has numerous highlight reel-quality plays this season, including a home run robbing catch in U of L's 12-0 win at Kentucky on April 10, which ranked second on SportsCenter's Top Plays countdown for the day. He also had a spectacular wall-climbing catch in left center field in the Cardinals' home win against Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 22.

No. 22 Louisville (26-11, 8-4 BIG EAST) will return to BIG EAST action with a pivotal three-game series at league-leader USF this weekend in Tampa, Fla.
