WICHITA, Kan. - University of Louisville senior right-hander Derek Self was named to the midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association on Thursday.
Self (Cave City, Ky./Caverna HS) enters the weekend with a team-high seven saves, which is tied for tops in the BIG EAST Conference. Overall, Self has 15 appearances out of the Cardinals' bullpen this season and is 0-1 with a 2.14 ERA. One of Louisville's team captains in 2012, Self has a 17-4 career record to go along with nine career saves.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 6, prior to the start of NCAA Super Regional tournament competition. The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced during the 2012 College World Series.
No. 22 ranked Louisville (26-11, 8-4 BIG EAST) will return to BIG EAST action with a pivotal three-game series at league-leader USF this weekend in Tampa, Fla.
