SERIES OVERVIEW
Entering this weekend's series, Louisville and Akron have met only twice previously with the Cardinals sweeping a doubleheader on May 14, 2002. On that day in Louisville, the Cards earned a 3-1 win in seven innings in the opener before taking a 6-2 decision in another seven-inning game in the finale. The matchup with the Zips is the first of two weekend series on the Cardinals' schedule in 2013 with members of the Mid-American Conference as Kent State will visit Jim Patterson Stadium on March 1-3.

ABOUT AKRON
Akron is 0-3 overall after being swept in a weekend series at nationally ranked Georgia Tech to open the season. The Zips are led by second-year head coach Rick Rembielak, who is 17-41 during his tenure in Akron. Last season, the Zips were 17-38 overall and 10-17 in the MAC to finish fifth in the six-team East Division. Akron did not qualify for the eight-team MAC Championship in 2012.

LAST OUTING FOR THE CARDINALS
Paced by strong offensive performances from outfielders Adam Engel and Cole Sturgeon and infielder Sutton Whiting, fourth-ranked Louisville earned a 17-6 victory over visiting Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday during the Cardinals' home-opener at newly expanded Jim Patterson Stadium.

Engel led the way for Louisville going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, career best four RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases in the win. Sturgeon added four hits with two stolen bases, two runs and an RBI, while Whiting finished 3-of-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. On the mound, righty Dace Kime allowed only one run on three hits with five strikeouts in four innings as the Cardinals' starter on a predetermined staff day to earn his first win of the season.

EIGHT-GAME HOMESTAND STARTS SECOND LARGEST HOME SLATE EVER FOR LOUISVILLE
Slated to play the second most home games in school history at expanded Jim Patterson Stadium, the Louisville baseball team opened its 36-game home schedule on Wednesday with the win over EKU. The 2013 schedule ranks second in Cardinals' baseball history trailing only the 43 home games played in 1980.

Wednesday's game also started an eight-game homestand for the Cardinals and a stretch of 24 of 26 games for Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium, which has an updated seating capacity of 4,000. The eight-game homestand is the second longest on the schedule behind the 12-game stretch from March 8-24.

NOTES AND TRENDS TO FOLLOW
The Cardinals were 40-2 in 2012 when leading after seven innings and are 2-0 in that situation this season... Louisville was 32-10 in 2012 when scoring first and is 3-0 this season when scoring first... The Cards had a 132-44 scoring advantage in the first two innings last season, while this season, they have a 12-0 edge in the first two frames... UofL was 26-15 in day games in 2012 and are 3-0 this season... Nick Ratajczak, Cole Sturgeon, Adam Engel and Sutton Whiting have each hit safely in all four games this season.

THOMPSON NAMED BIG EAST PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Louisville junior right-handed pitcher Jeff Thompson was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 18 following his dominant performance in the fourth-ranked Cardinals' win over USF on Feb. 16.

Thompson struck out a career best 12 batters while allowing just four hits in five innings en route to a 10-1 win for Louisville over USF. The 2012 All-BIG EAST selection also set a BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge record for single-game strikeouts.
