Coach McDonnell and Ijames Discuss Tuesday's Loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 28th-ranked Louisville baseball dropped a disappointing 3-2 decision to visiting Kentucky on Tuesday night in front of a season-high crowd of 3,245 at Jim Patterson Stadium.

With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 20-12 overall, while the Wildcats improved to 17-17 on the season with the win. The two teams will meet again on April 26 at 7 p.m., ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington.

After fighting back from a 2-0 deficit to even the score late in the game, the Cardinals allowed a run in the top of the ninth inning and were unable to battle back in the bottom of the frame to suffer their second straight loss overall. After reaching base with a one-out double down the right field line off Louisville junior reliever Derek Self (Cave City, Ky./Caverna HS) and moving to third on a wild pitch by Cards' closer Tony Zych (Monee, Ill./St. Rita HS), leftfielder Chad Wright scored on an RBI single to right field by shortstop Taylor Black for the game-winner.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals were threatening with a runner on first and only one out against Wildcats' reliever Trevor Gott, but the comeback attempt was halted when freshman shortstop Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) was struck out looking and freshman outfielder Adam Engel (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland HS) was caught stealing by UK catcher Michael Williams to end the game. Gott pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 2-3 on the season. Self allowed one run on one hit in 1.2 innings of work to suffer his first career loss, which dropped him to 2-1 on the season and 16-1 in his three seasons as a Cardinal.

At the plate, junior outfielder Stewart Ijames (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) led the Cardinals going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior catcher J.J. Ethel (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) and sophomore third baseman Cade Stallings (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut HS) had two hits each. For Kentucky, Black finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in Tuesday's game with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning against Louisville freshman righty Jeff Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central HS). After reaching base on an error to open the game, Wright scored later in the frame on an RBI single up the middle by rightfielder J.T. Riddle for the first run. The final run was plated when Black scored from third as third baseman Thomas McCarthy grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

The Cardinals cut the deficit in half at 2-1 in the sixth inning as sophomore designated hitter Kyle Grieshaber (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette HS) reached base with a one-out double down the left field line, moved to third on a throwing error by pitcher Jordan Cooper and then scored on an RBI single by Ijames.

An inning later, Louisville tied the score at 2-2 as freshman pinch runner Ty Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored from third on an RBI groundout by Chittenden. The inning started with a leadoff single by Stallings, who was then replaced by Young. Young moved to third on a single to right center by Ethel before scoring on the groundout. The score remained that way through a scoreless eighth inning before the game-winner in the ninth.
