LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville baseball team loaded the bases with two out in the ninth, but could not deliver the final blow as they fell to Saint Louis 5-3 in the series opener Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.
In the first, Cardinal shortstop J.T. LaFountain crushed a one-out ground rule double to center field and advanced to third on a single to right by Josh Bolen. A wild pitch moved Bolen to second, and Morgan Bojorquez plated them both with a single up the middle for a 2-0 Louisville lead.
In the Saint Louis half of the fourth, a hit batsmen and a walk preceded a three-run home run to right by first baseman Corey Lawson to put the Billikens up 3-2.
Cardinal catcher Ron Braun lead off the fourth inning, drilling the first pitch to deep center field for his second home run of the season, tying up the game at three.
A two-run single by Aaron Thompson in the eighth broke the 3-3 tie and lifted the Billikens to the win, after another hit batter and a single put two on for Thompson.
Scott Barber (6-2) lost for just the second time this season, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out 10. It was the third time this season he has fanned double figures.
Jake Baumgartner (4-2) earned the win for the Bills, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out five. Dave Guntorius pitched a shaky ninth to pick up his fourth save.
The Cards will again host Saint Louis Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. Admission and parking are free. The games can be heard on WAVG 1450 AM in Louisville.
