McDonnell and Amlung Discuss Saturday's Home Win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore right-hander Justin Amlung pitched 7.0 shutout innings to lead the 19th-ranked Louisville baseball team to 3-0 win over Xavier on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium and even the weekend series.
With Saturday's win, the Cardinals ended a season-long three-game losing skid and improved to 12-6 overall, while the Musketeers dropped to 12-7 with the loss, which halted their nine-game winning streak. Louisville and Xavier will conclude the weekend series with the deciding third game on Sunday at 1 p.m., ET, and admission is free.
Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS) finished with a career-best seven strikeouts and allowed just five hits to improve to 4-0 on the season. He extended his scoreless streak to 15.0 innings and led the way as the Cardinals earned their sixth shutout win this season, which leads the nation and is already the second most in school history. Through his first five starts this season, Amlung has allowed only two runs in 35.2 innings for an ERA of just 0.50 with 23 strikeouts and seven walks.
Freshman righty Jeff Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central HS) followed Amlung with a perfect eighth inning to extend his career-opening scoreless streak to 9.1 innings, while junior right-hander Tony Zych (Monee, Ill./St. Rita HS) earned his sixth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
After a scoreless first inning, Louisville opened the scoring with two runs on three hits in the second for a 2-0 advantage. The inning started with a leadoff walk from Xavier starter Jon Richard to junior outfielder Stewart Ijames (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS), who then advanced to second on an infield single by freshman first baseman Ryan Seiz (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock HS) and scored on an RBI single through the left side by sophomore third baseman Cade Stallings (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut HS).Two batters later, Louisville added its second run of the inning on a bases loaded, RBI walk by senior outfielder Drew Haynes (New Albany, Ind./New Albany HS).
Following a scoreless third, Louisville added its final run in the fourth inning as Stallings led off with a single to center, moved to second on a single to right center by freshman shortstop Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) and then scored on an RBI single down the right field line by freshman Ty Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep) for the 3-0 lead.
Stallings led the Cardinals at the plate on Saturday finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Seiz was 2-for-4 with a run. Haynes finished 1-for-2 with a walk and is the Cardinals' team leader in hitting at .326. For Xavier, Richard took the loss to fall to 2-2 overall after allowing three runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings.
