LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville baseball team found themselves on the 2-1 losing end of a pitching duel against Toledo at Cardinal Stadium Sunday.
Louisville (5-2) was looking for a sweep in the three-game series.
The Rockets (1-2) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on an RBI double by Drew Hoisington, and Scott Boley tripled and scored on a Cardinal error by third baseman J.T. LaFountain in the sixth for the only runs they would need.
The Cards plated their only run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by LaFountain.
Louisville stranded seven runners and rolled into four double plays, halting potential rallies in the second, third and fourth an closing the game in the ninth.
Boomer Whiting had two of the Cardinals' six hits, walked and stole three bases on the afternoon.
Toledo starter Nick Szczur (1-0) picked up the win with seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out five.
Ben Lovell earned the save, giving up a run on two hits and two walks, while fanning one in two innings of work.
Justin Valdes (0-2) started for U of L and was the hard-luck loser surrendering two runs, one of which was earned, while scattering seven hits and a pair of walks. He struck out five.
Louisville will host Western Kentucky on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium where admission and parking are free.
