2005: Took advantage of his limited opportunities, starting three games at DH, and hitting .286 in his redshirt freshman campaign. Was 3 for 8 in pinch-hitting appearances. Scored a run as a pinch-runner in win over Evansville (5/17). Picked up his third pinch hit of the season in win at #24 TCU (5/14). Smacked a pinch single in win over Butler (5/10). Doubled home a run and walked in win at SLU (4/23a). Smoked a pair of base hits in his second and third collegiate at bats against #12 Georgia (3/12b). Entered his first collegiate game at third as a defensive replacement, picking up an assist.
2004: Redshirted.
High School: Lettered in four different sports for the South Laurel Cardinals. Picked up letters in golf and soccer to go with three letters in basketball and four in baseball. Two-time All-District and All-Region shooting guard as well as honorable mention All-State. Played every position but first base as a three-time All-District and two-time All-Region performer in baseball. Was 2003 county Player of the Year in both baseball and basketball.
Personal: Born 9/24/84 in Birmingham to Rick and Lynn Townsend. Has one older brother and one older sister. He is majoring in communications at U of L. Biggest thrills in sports is beating North Laurel, and winning the 2003 State American Legion tournament. Would like to get into sports broadcasting someday. Likes video games and eating in his spare time. Forrest Gump and Rush Hour 1 and two are his favorite movies. Likes Fresh Prince, Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond on TV. Miguel Tejada, Gustavo Kuerten and Walt Frazier are his favorite athletes. Lasagne, his mom's squash and his dad's venison are his favorite foods. Follows the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Cardinals. His dream dinner guests would be Big Boi, Jesus and Jackie Chan. Once nearly "kicked the can" when he ate a peach and his throat swelled shut. U of L basketballer Larry O'Bannon is the greatest athlete he has ever faced. his brother Tanner played at WKU and is in an independent league. His sister played tennis at Western and his dad played football at West Virginia.
