2005: Went 2-1 with a 6.03 ERA, starting six games and pitching in 12 as a true freshman. Tossed 5.2 scoreless innings in three league outings. The only pitcher on the roster to work two of the team's shutouts. Allowed just three hits and a walk in three scoreless innings to earn a win in a shutout of Evansville (5/17). Gave up just two hits in 2.2 innings of relief, fanning one at #24 TCU (5/13). Notched a perfect two innings, combining on a shutout of Morehead (5/4). Twirled two innings of one-hit ball against USM(4/30a). Struck out a career-best nine in 5.1 innings against WKU (4/25). Tossed a scoreless inning out of the pen against #1 Tulane (3/26b). Picked up his first collegiate win against Miami (3/6a), surrendering one earned run on three hits and a pair of walks, striking out three out of the pen. Made a solid college debut with five innings of work, allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. Exited the game with the Cards leading 4-2 in a game they eventually won over EKU (2/23) 8-7.
High School: Earned five varsity letters as a center fielder and pitcher for the Red Devils. Four years All-District, three-time All-Region and twice All-State. Set the state record with 19 strikeouts in a single game. Placed tenth in Kentucky with a single-season strikeout total of 129.
Personal: Born 10/1/85 in Owensboro, Kentucky to Bernie and Traci Smith. Is an only child. Undecided on his major. Would like to be a software engineer when he finishes school. Likes to play video games, basketball, ping pong and pool. Van Wilder and Lord of the Rings are his favorite movies. Likes to eat Frosted Flakes, Caramello bars and Chinese food. His favorite athlete Ken Griffey Jr. is his favorite athlete and he would join Michael Jordan and Nolan Ryan in Jake's dream golf foursome. Not many people know that he likes to sing and would like to learn to play guitar.
