2013: Hit .286 with five RBI and four runs scored in 38 games played, including seven starts. Delivered biggest hit of career with two-out, two-strike, two-run single as a pinch hitter to push Louisville ahead for good in game one win over Vanderbilt in NCAA Super Regional. Went 3-for-5 with a stolen base in March 16 win over Xavier. Was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in win over Kent State on March 1. Earned first start of the season in right field while going 1-for-3 in Cards' win over Akron on Feb. 24. Came off the bench to hit first career triple and scored once in Feb. 20 win over EKU. Made one appearance off the bench in season-opening weekend.
Summer 2012: Hit .298 with 26 RBI, 15 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples and nine stolen bases in 42 games for the Florence RedWolves in the Coastal Plain League.
2012: Hit .271 with 16 runs and 10 RBI in 51 appearances and 14 starts. Had a double and scored twice in elimination game win over Missouri at NCAA Regional in Tucson. Came off the bench for two singles, a walk and two runs in May 6 win at WVU. Singled and scored twice in each of the Cards' two wins over UConn on April 27-28. Was 2-for-2 with a walk, an HBP, an RBI and a run scored in April 24 win over No. 1 Kentucky. Finished with best game as a Cardinal in April 21 win at USF after going 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored. Had a three-run triple in Cardinals' 21-4 win at Indiana on April 17. Came off the bench for a single in the Cards' April 3 win over WKU. Had an RBI single and scored a run in Cards' series-clinching victory over Pepperdine. Earned first career RBI on Feb. 28 against Eastern Illinois. Walked and scored a run in win over Michigan State. Went 1-for-3 as the starting leftfielder in opening day loss to Minnesota.
Before U of L: Played two seasons at Seminole State Community College (Okla.) where he was a Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference Gold Glove winner. In 2011, he hit .345 with three home runs, 38 RBI, 16 stolen bases, 13 doubles and four triples for Seminole's OCAC championship squad. In his first season at Seminole State in 2010, he hit .357 with five stolen bases.
High School: Was a four-year letterwinner at Eufaula High School, where he was coached by his father Stacey Helms. Earned All-State honors and was named the Green County Player of the Year at Eufaula while advancing to the state semifinals twice in his career at Eufaula. Also earned four letters in football and was an All-State selection on the gridiron while playing both strong safety and wide receiver. Was a four-year letterwinner in basketball as a forward and was a two-time All-Conference selection.
Personal: Born Matthew Garrett Helms on June 16, 1991 in McAlester, Okla. Son of Stacey and Christy Helms. Has one sister, Brooke. Majoring in sport administration at the University of Louisville. After college, he wants to continue playing baseball professionally or become an underwater photographer/videographer. Person with the greatest influence on his career was his dad, who taught him everything he knows and led him to love the game. Hobbies and outside interests include wakeboarding, hunting, photography and riding four-wheelers. Favorite movies are Inception, Finding Nemo, Shutter Island, For the Love of the Game and Field of Dreams. Enjoys watching ESPN and History Channel. Favorite cereals are Golden Crisp and Cocoa Puffs. Favorite candy bars are Snickers and Reese's. Favorite team is the Atlanta Braves. Favorite restaurant is Quiznos. Enjoys listening to country music. Something many people may not know about him is that he is a certified scuba diver. His father Stacey played two seasons of baseball at Seminole State and two seasons at Oral Roberts University.
