2008: Named first team All-BIG EAST and second team All-America by PING! Baseball. Invited to compete at the 2008 USA Baseball National Team camp. Posted a 9-2 record with a 2.37 ERA in 91.0 innings, limiting opponents to a .220 average. Finished the season with 176 K's which ties him for 10th, a 2.53 ERA - the lowest in school history, 18 wins, tying him for 3rd. His 89 strikeouts is tied for 6th and his nine wins on the season is tied for fourth on the single season list. Named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team after he struck out three in an inning and two-thirds of hitless baseball to pick up the win in the BIG EAST Championship game against Cincinnati (5/24). Moved to 8-1 on the season with six innings of work in the BIG EAST Championship, picking up the win over Villanova (5/21), striking out seven. Lifted his record to 7-1 with eight brilliant innings in a win over Rutgers (5/16), allowing a run on two singles, walking one and striking out eight, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth. Improved to 6-1 by baffling one of the top hitting teams in the nation, allowing one earned run in 6.1 IP at WVU (5/10), striking out seven. Struck out a career-best 10 in eight innings, picking up the win over GU (5/2), scattering six hits and not allowing a run. Was back to his 2007 form again, making the BIG EAST Honor Roll with eight innings of one-run baseball, striking out a career-best nine in win over Villanova (4/19). Worked six scoreless innings in win at USF (4/12), striking out four. Picked up his second win of the season with five shutout innings against Kent (3/15), striking out six. Threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief against Xavier (3/11), striking out four. Logged a solid six innings of shutout baseball at The Citadel (3/1), but picked up a no decision. Picked up the win in his 2008 debut, fanning four in five one-hit innings against CSU (2/22).
2007: Selected the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year after posting a 9-2 record with a 2.67 ERA. Led the BIG EAST in starts (18) and opponents batting average, limiting opposing bats to a paltry .189 average. Was fifth in innings pitched (104.2) which was also fifth in the Cardinal single season record books. His nine wins is tied for fourth in U of L history. Named Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and PING!. Was dominant in BIG EAST play, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.15 ERA in nine starts that covered 54.1 innings. He struck out 48 and walked just 12 while opponents hit just .171 against the southpaw. Three of his starts resulted in shutouts. Worked 6.1 innings of one-hit baseball in Super Regional against OSU (6/9). Allowed a run over three innings out of the bullpen, picking up the win over Missouri in the championship game of the NCAA Regional, while pitching on one day's rest (6/4). Gave up a single run in six innings to earn the win against Rutgers (5/23) in the BE Championship. Struck out a career-high eight in four innings against Notre Dame (5/12). Pitched the Cardinals to a 3-0 win over St. John's, the first time all season the Red Storm have been blanked. Went 7.1 scoreless, allowing five hits and a walk. Named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and Rivals.com National Freshman of the Week after brilliant 8.0 shutout innings against USF (4/28) in which he allowed just two baserunners and retired the first 16 batters of the game. Faced one over the minimum through five innings at Seton Hall (4/21), carrying a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out three in the win in seven innings. Allowed just a single in 6.1 IP in win at UConn (4/14), walking none and striking out five. Did not allow a hit until there was one away in the 7th. Put in another quality start against Pitt (4/6), striking out a career-high seven. Notched the win over WVU (3/31) with five strong innings, striking out six. Worked a solid 4.2 innings, striking out four at Villanova (3/24b), helping Cards to the win. Earned his first career win with 5.1 scoreless innings of three-hit ball, striking out four against Xavier (3/17). Worked a career-long seven innings, allowing one run while scattering five hits and three walks, striking out six against ISU (3/4), picking up a no decision. Wasted no time, jumping into the weekend rotation as a true freshman and tossing five innings of one-hit baseball, giving up one unearned run, walking one and striking out six against SIU (2/18).
High School: A three-year letterwinner at Owensboro Catholic under Troy Pendley. Named All-District, All-Regional, All-"A" State Tournament and was ranked as the top HS prospect in the state of Kentucky by Prospect Plus in 2006. Tossed a perfect game his sophomore season. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 37th round out of high school. Posted a 21-8 record with 287 strikeouts during his prep career.
Personal: Born 1/12/88 to Ben and Becky Marks in Owensboro, Ky. Is the middle of three children. His parents have been his biggest influence on his athletic career. Likes hunting and fishing in his spare time. Cap'n Crunch is his favorite cereal and Zero Bar is his favorite candy bar. His favorite quote is "Don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today." He grew up on a tobacco farm.
