2002: Was 3-3 with a 3.94 ERA for the Cards, appearing in 27 games, tying him for fourth all-time in U of L single season history and the seventh highest total in C-USA. Came out of the bullpen in 24 games, earning a team-high four saves, tied for eighth in Cardinal history and C-USA. Struck out 40 in 59.1 innings while walking just 16 batters. Fernandez was 3-2 with a 2.60 ERA coming out of the pen, and 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA and two saves in 15 non-conference outings. Opened the season with 15.3 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while fanning 14 and going 2-0. Earned a spot on the NECBL All-Star team during summer league play with the Danbury Westerners.
2001: Lead the team in ERA with a 4.44 mark while going 2-2. Had a 2.83 ERA in conference games, the third best figure in the conference, while going 2-0. Opponents hit .236 against Carlos in league play, the 4th lowest total in C-USA. Pitched in 14 games, all in relief, allowing one of fewer earned runs in eight of those opportunities. Had one of the best efforts of any Cardinal hurler when he posted 7.2 scoreless frames of relief at Charlotte(4/14). In that game he struck out five, allowing only four hits. Also picked up the win against South Florida with a solid 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk to go with one strikeout.
2000: Pitched in seven games in his first year of college ball, coming out of the bullpen. Tossed 1.2 scoreless innings against Xavier giving up five hits and striking out two. Had 11 strikeouts and only five walks in his 17.2 innings of work.
High School: Attended Monsignor Edward Pace High in Miami Lakes, Florida, the same high school as major league pitcher Alex Fernandez. Hit .398 as a junior with a record-tying 14 doubles, and had a 7-2 record and 1.75 ERA on his way to being named second team all-county and all-state as a pitcher. Was second team all-state and first team all-county as a senior first baseman hitting .415. Played on the silver medal winning team in the Junior Olympics. Team was state runner-up junior and senior seasons.
Personal: Born 12/26/80 in Hialeah, FL to Maria and Carlos Fernandez. Is studying accounting at U of L. Biggest thrill in sports is being member of first U of L team in school history to advance to an NCAA Regional. Favorite cereal is Fruity Pebbles, among his favorite foods are his mom's Bistec Milanesa, his abuela Myriam's Boleche and his abuela Maria's black beans. Carlos’ uncle Jim Valdes played baseball at Tennessee. His parents are his biggest influence on him. Dream golf foursome would be Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens and Sandy Koufax.
