2001: Lead the team in hits(70), slugging percentage(.509), total bases(114), doubles(21) and lead C-USA with eight sac flies. The 21 doubles was the 4th highest single season total in U of L history and placed him fourth in conference. Drove in a team-leading 58 runs, placing him ninth in C-USA, including 20 in his first 16 games. Tied for the team lead in home runs with seven. Reached base in all but five games. Ended the season with a nine-game hitting streak in which he hit .371 with 10 RBI and seven runs scored. Drove in five runs against Detroit-Mercy(2/18), one of 16 games he drove in two or more runs. Started all but one game at third or first, hitting .312. Longest hitless streak was two games and happened only twice. Played for the Danbury Westerners in the NECBL this past summer, where he smacked a league-high 12 doubles, while hitting .264 with four homers and 20 RBI.

1999 & 2000: Played at Mesa Community College in Arizona, where he was named first team all-conference and second team all-region. Hit .402 with 19 doubles, three triples, and five home runs. Scored 61 runs while driving in 62 and stealing 8 bases his sophomore year. Teammates with current Cardinal Scott Gerlach. Was a single short of the cycle with six RBI against Arizona Western in season opener.

High School: Graduated from Galena High School in Carson City, Nevada where he was a four-year letter winner at shortstop, earning all-conference honors twice for the Grizzlies.

Personal: Born 3/3/80 to Louise and James Budak in Reno, Nevada, Major is finance. From same hometown as major leaguer Matt Williams. He wears #9 because of Williams, Ted Williams and The Natural. His summer team in 1998 set a Connie Mack record with home runs by six consecutive batters. One of his biggest thrills in athletics was a 15 minute session in the batting cages with Tom Lasorda last season. Person with greatest influence on athletic career “everyone that said I’m not good enough, that just fueled my desire to become better.” Dream dinner guests would include Bill Gates-”when he was in school so I could get in on his microsoft team and become a billionaire”, Mickey Mantle and Bob Marley. Mike’s uncle Dan played safety at UNLV with Randall Cunningham, and for one season with the Vikings.
