LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field program begins its 2013-14 indoor season on Friday, competing in its only December event, with the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind.

Under first-year coach Dale Cowper, the Cardinals begin action on Dec. 13 in the Gladstein Fieldhouse on the track at 5 p.m., with the field events commencing at 5:15 p.m. Action on Saturday for the multi-events commences at 9:30 a.m. Live results can be found online at www.IUHoosiers.com.

Headlining the returnees competing in Indiana is multiple BIG EAST champion Sam Bombaugh and indoor all-conference honorees Calvin Arsenault, Brad Vivace, and Patrice Gates.

After a pair of women’s sprinters open the meet for the Cardinals, a quartet of throwers will begin the field events with the weight throw. Gates leads the group after scoring at the BIG EAST indoor championships twice in her career.

Arsenault, Louisville’s first male athlete to compete in the day, will participate in the 60m hurdles trials. He scored a third-place finish at the conference championships last year and currently holds the school record in the event with a time of 7.88.

At 6:25 p.m., Louisville’s duo of Bombaugh and Vivace are slated to compete in the weight throw. Bombaugh won both the weight throw and shot put titles at last year’s BIG EAST championships, becoming the first athlete in the conference’s history to accomplish such a feat.

During the meet, the Cardinals send will send their sprinters to compete in the 300m and 500m events. Marcus Motill will run in both events on the men’s side, while a total of seven will compete in the women’s 300m.

In the jumps events, newcomer Ben Williams, a U-20 National Championships record holder and 2009 world youth champion will participate in the triple jump at 8 p.m. On the women’s side, Brittany Owens is scheduled to compete in the long jump and triple jump events. Freshman Bre’Yana Wash will compete alongside Owens in the long jump.

Louisville concludes the first day of competition with Maggie Gilbertson in the high jump.

On Saturday, Kim Cardeiro and Brianne Brown will take part in the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800m pentathlon events.
