LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Four University of Louisville track and field student-athletes are making their collegiate debuts this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which begin Wednesday in Eugene, Ore.
The four-day championships at Oregon University's Hayward Field run until Saturday. Live results will be available through www.FlashResults.com. Coverage on Wednesday and Thursday is available on ESPN3, and action on Friday and Saturday will be shown on ESPNU.
Three of Louisville's are competing on the first day.
Brittany Owens, who finished 10th in the women's long jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, is the Cardinals' first student-athlete in action at 7:15 p.m. ET. Currently, her personal-best mark of 6.23m/20-5.25 ranks 13th best in the region and 19th nationally. She finished seventh in the event at the conference championships.
Shortly after, Calvin Arsenault is slated to line up in the 400m hurdles semifinal at 9:15 p.m. The Kitchener, Ontario, native is the first male sprinter to qualify for the national championships after placing fifth in the event at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. He logged a time of 50.75, breaking a school record that he has set multiple times during his career. Should the AAC champion advance, he would take part in the finals on Friday at approximately 6:33 p.m.
Tyler Byrne concludes the first day of competition with the 10,000m final at 10:15 p.m. He finished eighth in the race at the preliminary rounds behind a time of 29:55.41, securing his first trip to the national championships.
Byrne collected All-America honors earlier this season in cross country after winning the AAC individual cross country title. During the track and field season, he won the AAC outdoor 5,000m title and captured the league's indoor 3,000m crown.
Edwin Kibichiy is slated to race on Thursday, the second day of competition, in the 3,000m steeplechase. The sophomore continues the Cardinals' streak of having an athlete take part in the steeplechase each year since 2009. To reach Saturday's final, Kibichiy needs to finish in the top 12 of the 24-man pack.
A sophomore from Kapsabet, Kenya, Kibichiy finished 12th in the race at the preliminary rounds to lock up the last spot for nationals. He finished in a personal-best time of 8:47.78, nearly eight seconds better than the time he used to win the AAC 3,000m steeplechase title.
