LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville track and field's Sam Bombaugh and Tyler Byrne earned Capital One Academic All-District 2 accolades, the College of Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, and nominees must carry at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average.
The duo make up two of just 11 spots on the NCAA Division I District 2 Team, which encompasses student-athletes from the states of Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
A political science major, with a minor in history, Bombaugh boasts a 3.90 grade-point average. Recently, he was named one of the recipients for the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He graduated Magna Cum Laude after recording a 4.0 semester grade-point average for the fourth time in his tenure. In February, he was named the AAC Conference Institutional Male-Scholar Athlete for track and field.
During the track and field season, Bombaugh won his second-consecutive weight throw title at the AAC Indoor Championships. He set the school record this year in the hammer throw, where he ranks 36th nationally and 19th in the East region.
Byrne, a justice administration major, currently boasts a 3.81 cumulative GPA. In April, he was named a Red and Black Scholar Athlete for maintaining at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average.
The senior has put together remarkable seasons in both cross country and track.
Byrne became the school's third cross country All-American, shortly after earning all-region honors and winning the AAC individual cross country title. He set school records in the 8K and 10K distances.
On the track, Byrne won the AAC indoor 3,000m title and the league's outdoor 5,000m crown. He took runner-up at AAC outdoor championships in 10,000m, while finishing third at indoor championships in 5,000m.
