ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Louisville track and field teams begin the 2014 outdoor season this weekend, as the squads travel south to take part in the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
In total, 36 Cardinals are scheduled to participate in the three-day event that starts Thursday, March 20. All competition will be held in the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.
The first day of competition features the men's and women's hammer throw after the heptathlon. Both Brianne Brown and Hannah Cox are slated to participate in the multi-events competition. In the throwing events, local product freshman Trevor Troutman from Louisville highlights a pair of throwers in the men's competition, while Patrice Gates is one of three in the women's hammer throw.
Friday features a larger slate of competition. Following the heptathlon long jump and the women's javelin, Louisville's first track event begins at 5:20 p.m. with the women's 400m hurdles. Highly touted freshman Gwen Shaw, a four time All-American in high school, is slated to run in the event alongside Alexis Murry.
Calvin Arsenault, who broke and continues to set school records in the sprinting events, takes part in the men's 400m hurdles at 5:35 p.m. He ran a personal-best 51.74 last year in the event at the NCAA Division Preliminary Rounds.
Later that day, Kelsie Courtney takes part in the women's high jump, followed by Brad Vivace and Steve Wade in the men's shot put. Vivace won the league's outdoor title in the event and qualified for the preliminary rounds.
The Cardinals conclude the day with the women's and men's sprint medley relays, respectively, and the women's 5,000m.
Saturday features a slew of field events for the Cardinals. Louisville begins with the women's discus and men's high jump before reaching the women's pole vault. Freshman Chanel Krause scored sixth in the pole vault at the AAC Indoor Championships, while nearly breaking the school record during the year, and Chelsea Bingham recorded nearly a half-foot personal best.
Brittany Owens and Bre'Yana Wash are scheduled to take part in the women's long jump at 2:45 p.m., while Jeron Brown and Nick Kennedy participate in the men's section shortly thereafter. Owens finished second at the conference's indoor championships, and Wash took fifth as a freshman. Kennedy also had a solid meet at the AAC Championships, improving more than two feet from the season opener to place eighth at the meet with a leap of 7.09m/23-3.25.
The last field event features Codie Hamsley, Isaac Bowling, and Andrew Nelson in the discus. Hamsley, the 2012-13 Indiana Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, placed sixth in the discus at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships during his prep career.
On the track, the men will compete in the 4x100m relay, while the women participate in the 4x400m relay.
