LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams finished the first day of the Indiana Hoosier Open with 15 top-five finishes, including three event victories, at the Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Ind.

“I’m very pleased with our indoor opener tonight,” first-year coach Dale Cowper said. “It was great to see both squads come out and show the work they have put in throughout the fall semester. This was a great first step toward an exciting spring.”

Sam Bombaugh and newcomer Ben Williams paced the men’s group with individual wins, while Brittany Owens recorded the women’s team’s lone victory.

In his only event, Bombaugh recorded a victory in the weight throw with a toss of 18.37m/60-3.25. Brad Vivace finished second in the event, and also had a runner-up effort in the shot put. Vivace’s shot put mark of 18.18m/59-7.75 ranks second in school history and is just two inches shy of Steven Hnat’s school record that was set in 2009.

Williams, who made his Louisville debut, won the triple jump in impressive fashion with a leap of 15.96m/52-4.50. Williams’ closest competition finished more than two-feet shy of his mark and the jump currently ranks No. 1 in the country.

Owens displayed a solid season opener in the triple jump as well, recording a personal best of 12.23m/40-1.50, more than a two-foot improvement from last year’s indoor-season best. The Boise, Idaho, native also scored a top-five finish in the long jump, taking third. Teammate and freshman Bre’Yana Wash finished second in the long jump.

Louisville received solid field performances from Patrice Gates, Chanel Krause, and Liberty Slinden.

Gates took second in the weight throw behind a mark of 18.57m/60-11.25, leading a trio of Cardinals who finished in the top 10 in the event. Also in the throws, Slinden checked in with a fourth-place finish in the shot put.

Krause, a freshman from Mobile, Ala., took fourth in the pole vault. She cleared the bar at 3.80m/12-5.50, a mark just shy of the school’s top-five list.

On the track, Marcus Motill raced to a second-place finish in the 500m, while Kayla Tyson placed fifth in the 60m trials and advanced to the finals, where she placed seventh.

Louisville’s Kim Cardeiro and Brianne Brown each are scheduled to compete on Saturday in the pentathlon, which begins at 9:30 a.m.
