LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville track and field’s Edwin Kibichiy finished seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase semifinals on Thursday evening at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., earning a spot in the event’s title race.

A redshirt freshman, Kibichiy clocked a personal-best time of 8:44.97 in the event to finish seventh in his heat and overall and will race on Saturday. The Kenyan native led the pack from the 600m split through the 1800m split and is the only freshman in the finals.

Kibichiy is the Cardinals’ third student-athlete to reach the finals in the 3,000m steeplechase over the last five years. Matt Hughes qualified in 2010 and 2011 - Hughes won the national title each of the two years - and Mattias Wolter advanced to the finals in 2013.

The AAC champion in the 3,000m steeplechase, Kibichiy and 11 other runners are scheduled to begin the finals on Saturday at 5:57 p.m. ET.
