LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville track and field’s Brittany Owens placed in the top 10 in the women’s long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday, leading the Cardinals in the first day of action at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The Boise, Idaho, native registered her best jump of the meet on her first attempt, leaping to a mark of 6.18m/20-3.50. The jump was good enough for fifth in her heat, 10th overall in the competition, helping the sophomore secure second team All-America honors.
Owens achieved the highest finish by a female Louisville student-athlete in the event, while becoming the second female student-athlete in program history to earn outdoor All-America honors in the long jump. She entered the meet with the 13th-best jump in the region and 19th nationally.
Calvin Arsenault, Louisville’s first male sprinter to reach the national championships, finished 23rd in the 400m hurdles semifinal. The junior, who capped a stellar season with honorable mention All-America accolades, took first in the event at the AAC Outdoor Championships and placed fifth in the finals at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds.
Louisville’s day concluded with Tyler Byrne finishing 19th in the 10,000m, earning the senior honorable mention All-America status in his first career appearance at the outdoor national championships.
The Georgetown, Ind., native finished 10th in the event at the preliminary rounds. During this year’s track and field season, he won the AAC outdoor 5,000m title and captured the league's indoor 3,000m crown.
Earlier this year, Byrne made his collegiate debut at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, where he became the school’s third All-American in the sport. He won the AAC individual cross country title before earning all-region honors behind a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Redshirt freshman Edwin Kibichiy is the Cardinals’ lone student-athlete in action on Thursday. He is slated to run in the 3,000m steeplechase at 8:35 p.m. ET.
