LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sam Bombaugh broke the school record in the hammer throw, and the University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up their final regular-season meet before the conference championships with 14 top-five finishes Saturday at the UK Relays in Lexington, Ky.
A senior, Bombaugh broke the 20-year-old record last year in March at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invite on a toss of 62.94m/206-6. He surpassed that mark on his fourth attempt, setting a new record of 62.96m/206-7 and a throw that ranks atop the AAC and in the top 20 in the region.
Teammate Brad Vivace placed fourth in the hammer throw on a season-best mark 62.19m/204-0. Louisville's throwers remain 1-2-3 in the conference in the event, with Bombaugh leading the way, Nils Westrich second, and Vivace holding the No. 3 position.
Louisville nearly had another school record eclipsed at the UK Track and Field Complex. Calvin Arsenault clocked a time of 51.86 in the 400m hurdles, nearly breaking his school record in the event of 51.74 set last year. He finished third in the race after taking fourth in the 110m hurdles earlier in the day.
The Cardinals' throwing contingent received other notable performances.
In the women's hammer throw competition, Louisville placed three in the top 10. Patrice Gates led the group with a third-place showing. She ranks second in the conference in the event and in the top 20 in the region.
Emmonnie Henderson, competing in just her second meet of the year, finished second in the shot put with a team-best throw of 15.71m/51-6.50. The mark puts her into the top five in the conference. Liberty Slinden finished third in the shot put.
Freshman Chanel Krause's second-place finish in the pole vault highlighted the jumps group's day. She cleared 3.90m/12-9.50, just shy of her school-record leap a week ago.
Maggie Gilbertson registered a season-best 1.70m/5-7 in the women's high jump, placing third, while Kim Cardeiro led a 7-8-9 finish in the women's long jump. Kevin Jackson set an outdoor personal best in the pole vault after clearing 4.75m/15-7.
The sprints group saw Antoine Keys and Alexis Murry clock season-bests in their respective events. Keys finished the 400m in 48.82 for an eighth-place finish, and Murry's 1:02.23 was good enough for fourth in the 400m hurdles. She also was part of the women's 4x400m relay team that logged a season-best 3:48.64.
Late Friday, two Cardinals competed at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Mattias Wolter ran to a season-best 8:42.20 in the 3,000m steeplechase for a seventh-place showing. The mark ranks at the top of the AAC and in the top 10 in the region. Teammate Benadate Cheruiyot ran to a time of 10:22.18 in the women's competition, breaking the 2011 record by 10 seconds previously held by Monica Hernandez.
Louisville begins competition at the AAC Outdoor Championships in Tampa, Fla., from May 2-4. The three-day event will be held at the USF Track and Field Stadium.
