LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A trio of top-five school marks highlighted the University of Louisville track and field teams' performances at the Crimson Tide Invitational on Saturday at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Sophomore Kelsey Cramsey, who broke the school's indoor record in the 800m at the American Athletic Conference Championships, raced to the second-fastest outdoor mark in the event in program history. Cramsey's time of 2:08.27 is a personal best and was good enough for a fourth-place finish. The mark ranks second in the conference and 11th in the NCAA Division I East Region.
The women's team produced another record book worthy mark on the track. Benadate Cheruiyot registered a fifth-place showing in the 5,000m behind a time of 16:52.45, fourth fastest in school history. It ranks fifth in the AAC.
The third mark was compiled by Calvin Arsenault. The school record holder in both outdoor hurdles events, Arsenault took third in the 110m hurdles behind a mark of 14.52. He placed second in the 400m hurdles. Arsenault ranks second in both events in the AAC and in the top 25 in the region.
Along with those four top-five finishes, Louisville collectively logged an additional 17 top-five marks on Saturday.
Louisville's distance group, throughout the competition, continued to show solid progression from the season opener.
Tyler Byrne collected the win in the men's 5,000m, while Edwin Kibichiy took runner-up honors and Ernest Kibet notched a third-place finish. Byrne's time of 14:12.88 currently is the top mark in the conference. Meanwhile, Mattias Wolter and Kibichiy each finished in the top three in the men's 3,000m steeplechase. Wolter, an All-American in the event, took second after completing the race in 8:51.91 - eight seconds shy of his national championship performance.
In the throwing events, Sam Bombaugh and Brad Vivace started the Cardinals' day with second- and third-place finishes, respectively, in the men's hammer throw. Bombaugh broke the school record in the event last year and had a toss of 61.57m/202-0 in his season debut. The throw gives Louisville a 1-2-3 hold in the event in the conference.
Patrice Gates led the women's group in the event, taking fourth with a season-best 58.16m/190-10 to help the senior maintain the No. 1 position in the conference.
In the men's shot put, Steve Wade and Vivace each pushed their way into the top five. On their final attempts, the duo recorded their best throws of the meet to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Liberty Slinden's performance in the shot put helped the senior climb the conference's descending order list. Behind a personal-best throw of 15.15m/49-8.50, which led her into a third-place finish, ranks third best in the AAC.
The Cardinals received three top-five showings in the women's long jump in addition to one in the men's pole vault. Bre'Yana Wash led a trio with a runner-up finish in the women's long jump. She had a season best - also a team best - leap of 6.02m/19-9, the top performance of any freshman in the event in the league. Kevin Jackson's outdoor personal-best of 4.70m/15-5 put him in a tie for fourth in the pole vault.
The Cardinals' sprints group had two other standout performances during the day. Jermaine Parrish made his outdoor collegiate debut that featured a fourth-place finish in the men's 100m. His 200m mark of 21.81, that was the sixth-fastest mark at the meet, ranks as the seventh-fastest time in the AAC.
Louisville returns to action on April 12 with its second home meet of the season. The Cardinals play host to the Border Battle, featuring Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue, at the Cardinal Park Track and Soccer Stadium.
