SOUTH BEND, Ind. -
University of Louisville senior Wesley Korir won the 5,000-meter run, while sophomore Andre Black won the long jump to lead the seventh-ranked Cardinal men's track and field team on the first day of competition at the Alex Wilson Invitational Friday at Notre Dame's Loftus Center.
Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya and the 2007 BIG EAST champion in the 5,000m, won Friday's race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13 minutes, 53.85 seconds, less than two seconds off of his school record mark of 13:52.63 set earlier this season at the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame.
Black, a native of Mobile, Ala., won the long jump title with a mark of 24 feet, 4.5 inches, while teammate Rudon Bastian, a sophomore from Nassau, Bahamas, was second with a jump of 24-02.25.
The fourth and final Cardinal athlete competing on Friday was senior Arthur Turland, the 2007 BIG EAST champion in the weight throw, who finished third in Friday's weight throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 64-01.75.
The second and final day of competition at the Alex Wilson Invitational, one of six last chance meets for the upcoming national championships, will begin at 10:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.
Following this weekend's meet, UofL will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10 at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center.
