University of Louisville swimmer Carlos Almeida broke the Portuguese national record for the 100-meter breaststroke in the first day of competition in the 14th FINA World Swimming Championship in Shanghai, China.

The BIG EAST champion and former Portuguese Olympian established a mark of 1:02.13, lowering the record four one-hundredths from the mark obtained by José Couto in the World championship of Fukuoka, in 2001 (1:02.17) and now he holds the national records for both the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke as well as in the 50-meters. Carlos Almeida previous best personal time was 1:02.46, achieved at the World Championships in Rome 2009.

"I have been chasing this record for two years, since the World Championships in Rome," said Almeida, who will be a senior at U of L this fall. "I was hoping to beat the record, but even though I am honored for doing so, I am not fully satisfied with my time".

The new mark opens bodes well for Almeida in for the 200-breaststroke.

"I have three days to tune the machine and to prepare for the 200 event," said Almeida. "My goal is to put together a quality performance, to improve my time enough to qualify for the Olympic Games of London."
